What's in a Name?

King Mountain and Creek were named for Preston King, a civil engineer from New Jersey who suffered from gold fever and moved west in 1879. King, who surveyed roads from Yampa to Steamboat Springs, was one of the early homesteaders in Egeria Park (Toponas area) in the early 1880’s. His son, Elmer King, ran one of the first steam threshing machines in south Routt County.
